Director (m/f/x) of the Antikensammlung

The Berlin Antikensammlung is the largest museum of Greek, Cypriot, Etruscan, and Roman art in Germany. The Antikensammlung presents its extensive collections in both the Altes Museum, which requires a comprehensive renovation, and its large-scale objects in the Pergamon Museum, which is currently closed but scheduled for partial reopening in 2027.

Your tasks

As the Director, you will be responsible for the museum's core operations, aiming to develop the institution structurally and with a future-oriented perspective as part of the Museumsinsel and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. You will successfully achieve goals in the following areas:

Leading of the Antikensammlung with its 22 staff members
Representing the Antikensammlung on the boards of the Museumsinsel and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz
Developing a forward-looking and persistant museum strategy, considering current museum policy and scientific discourses
Outlining the content strategy and museological programme
Overseeing provenance research and handling restitution questions sensitively and constructively
Implementing a contemporary public engagement and outreach strategy
Conceptualising and realising innovative and interdisciplinary exhibitions, both permanent and special
Initiating and supporting research projects and publications in the field of ancient art and archaeology
Establishing and deepening national and international networks through collaborations with museums, universities, and other cultural and scientific institutions
Responsibility for finances, including the acquisition of third-party funding
Promoting staff development and a culture of appreciation

Your profile

An academic degree (Master’s degree, Magister/Magistra, Diplom (Univ.) or equivalent) in Classical Archaeology
Scientific expertise in the field of ancient art and archaeology, demonstrated through publications, research projects and lectures
Several years of leadership experience with a cooperative and integrative management style
Experience in provenance research and restitution matters
Sound experience and success in current culture, museum and science interface management
Proven experience in planning and implementing special exhibitions
Economic expertise and cost awareness
Strong national and international networking with comparable organisations, scientific institutions, and the scientific community
Experience in the successful acquisition and retention of third-party funding, patrons, and sponsors
Excellent English skills, both written and spoken

Desirable:

A PhD or equivalent doctorate
Proficiency in at least one additional modern foreign language
A collaborative approach to working with the other museums on the Museumsinsel
